The backbone of any burger casserole is, of course, the ground beef. When selecting ground beef, it's essential to choose the right type for optimal flavor and texture. A blend with a fat content of 80/20 is ideal, providing the perfect balance of tenderness and flavor without being overly greasy. The higher fat content ensures that the meat retains moisture during cooking, resulting in a juicy and flavorful dish.

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef (preferably 80/20 for flavor)

1 medium onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

8 ounces sliced mushrooms (button or cremini work well)

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Salt and pepper, to taste

8 ounces cooked pasta (like penne or rotini)

2 cups shredded Swiss cheese, divided

1 cup beef broth

1 cup heavy cream

½ cup breadcrumbs (preferably seasoned)

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Cook the Ground Beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Use a wooden spoon to break it into crumbles as it cooks.

Sauté Vegetables: Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the beef. Cook until the onions become translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the sliced mushrooms and cook until the mushrooms begin to soften, about 5 minutes.

Season the Mixture: Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Allow the mixture to simmer for another 2-3 minutes to combine the flavors.

Combine with Pasta: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked pasta with the beef and mushroom mixture. Add in 1 cup of the shredded Swiss cheese, and mix well.

Prepare the Sauce: In a separate bowl, whisk together the beef broth and heavy cream. Pour this mixture over the pasta and beef mixture, stirring to combine.

Transfer to Casserole Dish: Pour the entire mixture into a greased 9x13-inch casserole dish. Spread it out evenly.

Top with Cheese and Breadcrumbs: Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of shredded Swiss cheese over the top of the casserole. Then sprinkle the breadcrumbs evenly over the cheese layer.

Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and the breadcrumbs are golden brown.

Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven and let it sit for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley for a burst of color and flavor.
