Ingredients

12 oz. ziti pasta

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 small onion, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 lb. ground beef or Italian sausage (or a mix)

1 can (28 oz.) crushed tomatoes

1 can (15 oz.) ricotta cheese

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 large egg

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Ziti: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the ziti pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente (about 8-10 minutes). Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic; sauté until fragrant and the onion is translucent (about 3-4 minutes). Add the ground beef or sausage, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned and fully cooked (about 6-8 minutes). Drain any excess fat.

Combine Ingredients: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper into the meat mixture. Simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened. Remove from heat and set aside.

Mix the Cheese Filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, half of the mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix well until fully combined.

Assemble the Baked Ziti: In a large baking dish (about 9x13 inches), spread half of the meat sauce on the bottom. Layer half of the cooked ziti over the sauce. Next, spread half of the ricotta mixture over the ziti. Repeat the layers: remaining meat sauce, ziti, and top with the remaining ricotta mixture. Finish with the remaining mozzarella cheese on top.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, you can spray the foil with cooking spray). Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Garnish and Serve: Remove the baked ziti from the oven and let it cool for about 5-10 minutes. Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.
